june youth article - joy (prepared by chermayne)

7th June 2008

This is the first week we started on learning about the Fruit of the Spirit, joy.

For this Saturday, we youth watched a movie called Patch Adams. It was about a guy called Hunter Patch Adams. In the beginning of the show, he admitted himself into the mental hospital for he thought he needed help. During the time he was there, he found out that he enjoyed helping people by helping one of the patients there and that by helping another, he helped himself in a way.

He then went to medical school. He didn't like the style of teaching in the school for he thought they were all too serious. He believed in his saying, "Use humour to take away pain." the principal however, didn't like his idea. Because of his longing to treat patients, he and his friends tarted a home where people could just come and go to be treated and not have to pay for the bills as he realized that many people don't go to the hospital for they cannot afford to pay for the medical bills.

A friend of his is thenered by one of their patients which wasn't mentally stable. Patch Adams becomes extremely upset and found that there was no point in helping people anymore. He was also all out of humour. But one day as he was sitting and thinking, a butterfly reminded him of life and then fufilled many patient's dreams.

The faculty advisor then expelles him for his "Excessive happiness..". Patch brought the matter up to the school board. He said that, "A doctor isn't just someone who delays death but improves the quality of life in the last few minutes..".

He then graduates and starts his own hospital. Doctors nowadays use his methods of doctoring of becoming a friend more than just a doctor and his "excessive happiness".

For this week, we did a review on the movie "Patch Adams" we watched last week.

Elaine started in saying that, "The definition of joy is deep or execessive happiness.... We can also find joy in weird places...". We then looked up Psalm 51:8 which shows that we can experience joy even in pain, weakness, and trial.

We then discovered another point; joy is contagious. One can be strengthened by those who are full of joy. Like Patch who finds he is healed by healing another. Patch also affected many people in the movie because of the joy within him. Therefore, it works the same for us. Us having the Fruit of joy can affect many lives around us. Also, we learnt that if you focus on the problem, you'll never find the solution.

We then shared about what each of us learnt from the movie. Jonathan said he learnt about being passionate in whatever you do, Josiah said joy overcomes sorrow, Charity shared that sometimes you have to ban rules to help, and Chermayne said that it is good to help others as you can help yourself in return.

Elaine then said that "Patch Adams took the time to know his patients more personally..." which meant that we should take the time to listen to others. Douglas shared that people tell another about their problems because they just want someone to listen. If one cannot talk to another about their problems, he or she has God to talk to.

The sharing ended with joy being found in the weirdest places. Like finding joy after failing an exam, talking to a stranger, spending time with friends, going home after school, magic tricks, going online on Facebook, shopping, and even falling sick.

21st June 2008

Today was a little special. Pastor did word for Phos (when the both ICUs are combined). He started off his sermon by asking us to share our most joyful incident we can remember throughout the whole of 2008. There were answers like birthday, coming back to HLLC, exam results, and listening to his first baby cry.

Pastor again pointed out like Elaine did, that joy is very contagious. But he also added that sorrow is too. He said that we should spread the joy that the Spirit has given us. Joy that surround us daily like money, power, etc. do not last forever for the world changes. But the joy that the Spirit gives us would last forever. It is even evident in times of sorrow and pain because one day we know that we would go back to be with the Lord forever.

Pastor then gave us steps to how we can gain joy; he introduced to us the 4 I's. The first 'I' was " Invite Jesus into your life ", the second 'I' was " Insteel God's Word in your heart ", the third 'I' was " Dont insult God ", and the fourth 'I' was " Don't ignore God ".

Pastor ended by saying that joy is a by-product of obedience.

28th June 2008

Today's Word started of by everyone sharing about their joy through the week.

We then were told about the story of the chief tax collector, Zaccheus (Luke 19:1).

We were then asked the question "Can money buy joy?". There were answers like no, temporary joy and physical joy. And yes it is true, money cannot buy joy. Neither can it buy health, a happy family, happiness, or your way to heaven. Also, having money, doesn't make as any more righteous.

Chee Wai defined true joy as Living with Christ. Because when we live and walk closely with Him, we can find true, eternal joy. In conclusion, we should all spread the joy. The joy that God wants us to have and wants us to tell the world about.
